THE EXCELLENCE IN MASONRY DESIGN AWARDS

Since 2002, Utah Masonry Council's Excellence in Masonry Design Awards have focused the spotlight on the power of collaboration between visionary owners, talented architects and engineers, and the skilled professionals who bring their ideas to fruition with masonry. All members of winning project teams – architects, structural engineers, owners, general contractors, mason contractors, and major suppliers – are recognized for outstanding masonry design, workmanship, and creativity.

ENTRY INFORMATION
Great masonry buildings deserve to be honored, both to recognize quality design and construction and to inspire excellence among others in the profession. The Utah Masonry Council will select Utah’s best projects in up to ten categories, as well as a single project which will receive the 2019 "Golden Trowel Award".

WHAT PROJECTS ARE ELIGIBLE?

Projects that make significant use of masonry (brick, block, stone, glass, adobe, etc.). The building doesn't have to be entirely masonry, but there must be prominent masonry components.

Projects must have been completed after January 1, 2014.

Projects submitted in previous years that did not receive an award may be resubmitted.

Projects must be located in Utah.

This is NOT a beauty contest.  Although aesthetics is one consideration, this contest is focused on innovative design, construction, cost-saving methods, and environmental considerations using masonry materials.

WHAT MASONRY MARKETS WILL BE RECOGNIZED?
Projects will be judged in each of the categories listed below. There is some overlap between categories, so indicate which category you feel is most appropriate. The judges reserve the right to place your entry into a different category or subdivide categories if the number of entries warrant. At their discretion, they may decide to withhold the award in a given category.

All categories are for new buildings, except Historic Restoration Projects.

●     Residential buildings: one and two-family structures.

●     Multi-family housing: any primarily residential building with more than two units.

●     Industrial: any structure used for manufacturing operations.

●     Commercial buildings: office buildings, warehouses, hospitals, big-box stores, and strip malls.

●     Institutional buildings: schools, churches, and transportation facilities.

●     Municipal buildings: courthouses, libraries, recreation centers, performance halls, police stations, prisons, and other local city, state and federal government facilities.

●
Historic restoration: restoration implies returning a building to its original condition. Facilities entered in this category must be listed as a historic building or be eligible for such status, and the entry must describe what efforts were made to maintain the building's historic significance.

●     Specialty masonry projects: masonry featured in walls, fencing, walk ways and/or entry features.

●     Private Projects Under $10 million:  privately owned buildings.

●
Public Projects Under $10 million: public owned, operated or sponsored buildings.

●     One project, from any of the categories above, will be selected to receive the 2019 "Golden Trowel Award".

THE JUDGES
A panel of independent industry experts will select the winners. Their decisions are final.

A panel of one qualified mason contractor and three practicing architects licensed outside of Utah and knowledgeable in the use of masonry will be impaneled to review the entries. Judges will consider overall design and the use of brick, concrete block, and/or natural stone. Their focus will be on aesthetic and technical design achievements and craftsmanship. The Utah Masonry Council recognizes the professionalism and expertise of the individual judges and supports the panel’s discretion in its choice of project winners
.

AWARDS WILL BE PRESENTED AT THE
EXCELLENCE IN MASONRY DESIGN AWARDS DINNER
FRIDAY, November 8, 2019
Marriott City Center Hotel in Salt Lake City
One complimentary ticket will be awarded per entry.
