Course Outline for 2015

Below is an outline of the first year Masonry I course.  All apprentices who have previous experience may request a test of any portion of the course to demonstrate their knowledge of the subject matter.  Successful passing of individual course module tests will credit the apprentice with completion of that module, thus waiving their attendance during that course instruction period. Current OSHA 10 and First Aid certification will also count for completion of those portions of the training.

Unemployment Insurance for Apprentices during training.
When the workers are participating in the apprenticeship program, they can file an unemployment insurance claim.  The best method to do this is through the Department of Workforce Services website at jobs.utah.gov, select "Temporary Assistance" and then "File a UI Claim".  The direct link is:
https://jobs.utah.gov/ui/InitialClaims/welcome.aspx

During the filing process, apprentices will be asked for the reason for separation. They should indicate a reduction in force.  They will also be asked if they have a definite recall date to return to work.  They should answer "yes". They will be asked additional questions on this and should provide the information requested.

They will also be asked if they are attending school or training. Again they should answer "yes".  There will be additional questions regarding the training.  They should answer those questions regarding hours and length of training, hours normally worked, etc.  They will then be asked: "What other facts would you like to present about this training?"  It will be to their advantage if the worker states they are participating in the Utah Masonry Council approved apprenticeship program.

Apprentices should file the unemployment claim in the week they are attending the training.  They will also have to file a weekly claim on the Sunday following the training in order to receive payment.  All the weekly filing instructions will be provided at the time they file their initial claim.  They will need to follow this process each week they are in training.

If for some reason they can't file online, they can call the Claims Center at 801-526-4400 and choose option 2 to file a new claim or reopen an existing claim. Call wait times are generally longest on Mondays so it is suggested they file on a day other than Monday, but still in the week they are attending training.

As far as the employer side of things.  Assuming the apprenticeship training is during normal business hours for the worker, there is really nothing special they need to do.  They will receive an "Employer Notice of Claim Filed" letting them know the individual has filed a claim for unemployment benefits. They will also receive an "Employer Notice of Potential Liability". Once the decision is issued, the employer will receive a copy advising they will not be responsible for any benefit costs for the period of time the worker is in this program.
