Join Utah Masonry Council council and you join an organization dedicated to making a positive difference in Utah's masonry industry. Here some of the ways we do just that.
An annual membership banquet, Lunch & Learn meetings, educational programs, roundtable meetings, and the “Mad About Masonry” golf tournament provide members with the opportunity to network with design professionals, contractors, peers, and customers.
UMC sponsors 3-5 seminars each year that provide an opportunity to learn the latest information and techniques on masonry design, construction, and business practices while acquiring the continuing education that Utah now requires for licensing.
General contractors, architects, and owners are given member profiles in response to their need for qualified mason subcontractors or products. Contact information and links are provided on this Web site.
UMC actively promotes the use of masonry through direct mailings, trade show participation, Skills USA sponsorship, and presentations to both professional, educational, and consumer audiences.
UMC increases the understanding of masonry by providing presentations to students attending BYU, USU, U of U, and Weber State University. Selected professors are sent to a three-day University Professors’ Masonry Workshop each year. Engineering students are provided with the current MSJC masonry design code and informed about masonry design software.
UMC maintains an out-of-work list to help masons connect with contractors who want to enhance their workforce.
UMC’s Executive Director is the Treasurer of MasonrySystems.Org, a national organization comprised of state executive directors who are joining together to promote masonry. We are currently constructing a Web site that acts as a “gateway” to all masonry questions and pulling our funds together to provide masonry advertising in professional magazines. UMC is also currently collecting good masonry design details that will be available for downloading through a link located at this site.
UMC’s Excellence in Masonry Design Awards is held in November of each year. With the cooperation of the American Institute of Architects, UMC recognizes Utah’s superior masonry designs and workmanship.
Members, cities, and design professionals receive free technical advice from our architect and engineering consultants. We are currently building a technical library of building codes, ASTMs, technical notes, and industry literature. Simply call if you need technical information, and we will locate an answer for you. In addition, UMC’s Technical Director delivers educational presentations and gives guidance to design professionals. He also helps solve technical problems on the jobsite at no cost to members.
Our periodic newsletter, announcements and postcards highlight specific masonry issues and also provide members and design professionals with up-to-date information about association activities, construction safety issues, code updates, and masonry design.
UMC supports the applied technology centers/colleges and is working to help them increase their enrollment and to run a state-registered training program that will help provide contractors with quality craftsmen.
With the help of Utah OSHA, UMC offers all member contractors and their employees regular safety training meetings at no cost.
In order to assist architects with estimated costs, UMC collects price and installation averages from our members and includes them in our Masonry Cost Guide. Price adjustments are made annually.
UMC provides opportunities for engineers to receive continuing education and for architects to receive AIA Learning Units. UMC also brings in a specialist each year to provide one or two masonry seminars geared specifically to them.
UMC has developed a challenging and informative Masonry Certification Program covering all aspects of masonry design, construction, and business management. Participants are able to acquire the knowledge that will help them make educated decisions and provide quality workmanship.
UMC is finally able to offer a money-saving workers’ compensation group benefit plan. Our members are commonly enjoying a 15 - 25% reduction in premium costs. One member has even saved 30%.
