Explain the Project and its Unique Use of Masonry Materials and Techniques:
The Mound Fort Junior High School Innovation Center will help students develop skills in several areas such as engineering, computer science, biology, and medicine through cross-curriculum collaboration. The center is an addition to an existing science wing built of structural masonry block in 2007. The biggest challenge was trying to match the existing addition to the school that was built several years ago, which was added onto a facility that was built back in the 1960s. This was a unique challenge to blend the new exterior finishes and block colors into the existing, while maintaining the district’s request to minimize costs and make the two buildings appear as one.  Countless hours were spent comparing colors to match existing while selecting new block finishes and colors to compliment and contrast to showpiece the new addition. The contractor, Hogan Construction, and subcontractor, Rocky Mountain Masonry, dedicated hours and worked as a team with the owner and design team to getting the colors of the existing and new to match and compliment.  As the block transitions from existing to new, from both the south and north, it beautifully compliments the adjacent glass and metal panel north wall that directs one to the beautiful mountain views.
