Explain the project and its unique use of masonry materials and techniques.
The design team was challenged with creating a medical center with a warm, comfortable and unique look that is not traditionally associated a hospital and leverage the views of surrounding Wasatch Mountain range. The design incorporates exterior materials that blend with the mountains & nearby landscape and incorporates both rustic and modern elements. The combination of quarry stone and simulated stone rain screen system was utilized to reflect the surrounding mountains. The new facility is one of the first of its kind built to meet new national energy-management codes.
There are many masonry elements on display at Mountain Point Medical Center. The concept of bringing the exterior to the interior is apparent as the exterior brick veneer passes through the building as a thin brick wall finish on the inside. It looks as though the building is built around two huge black monoliths of brick. The random natural stone columns greet you at the entrances and continue on the inside in the lobby and main atrium. The rest of the exterior matches the surrounding nature with desert sand colored brick and an open rain screen system made from Sunset colored thin stone cladding.
