Explain the project and its unique use of masonry materials and techniques:
Following a successful feasibility study and bond election effort in November 2010, the City of Provo commissioned the design team to design this 162,000 SF comprehensive recreation center. The Provo Mayor encouraged the team to create “the best recreation center in the West” to enhance the quality of life of Provo residents. The natatorium includes four indoor pools including a 25 yard x 25 meter competition pool with 300 spectators, a 4 lane x 25 yard instruction/ fitness pool, a 4,500 SF leisure pool, and a distinctive 1,200 SF deep water teen activity pool with artificial rock platform dive, climbing wall and rope swing. The recreation center also includes a three-court gym, Multi-Activity Court gym, three exercise dance studios, 6 racquetball courts, 8,000 SF fitness center, 1/5 mile elevated walk/ jog track, rock bouldering wall, teen and child “edu-tainment” area, concessions, locker rooms, eighteen family changing rooms and administrative offices. The Senior Center includes a lounge, wellness area, assessment office, classrooms, arts & crafts, library/ computer room, a 270 person community room with caterer’s kitchen and outdoor patio.
