Brief description of the project:
This project consists of an addition of a new wing and renovation of independent parts of the existing building.
The addition is a four story structure that is approximately 35,000 gross square feet, including 51 new guestrooms on the upper three levels and a large meeting room on the lower level. The addition also includes two new stair towers, a new elevator, and a new entrance for the new/existing meeting rooms.
The intent of the renovation is create more space in the existing laundry room, guest entry and entrance/ lobby/ dining area. The renovation also includes reconfiguration of the break room, administration areas, and exercise room.

Explain the project and its unique use of masonry materials and techniques.
Design challenges were centered on designing an addition that complements the existing facility and creates a contemporary expression of the new and expanded functions. Using brick which matches the existing for the walls and using contrasting Brown’s Canyon sandstone supporting elements allowed the primary design challenge to be achieved.
The existing Guesthouse building has 10 ft. floor to floor heights. This presented an engineering challenge in placing the new convention center on the ground floor below the guest rooms. The solution was to use the guest room walls as vierendeel trusses which allowed a clear span for the large conference and banquet room.
