Explain the project and its unique use of masonry materials and techniques:
West weber elementary was built in the early 1900’s, the original structure was destroyed by fire and replaced by the 1931 building. This second structure had a masonry design that was replicated throughout the new building. Several generations of families in the community had attended the school and the replacement building was to maintain the endearing qualities of the 1931 structure.
Some of the complexities of the design included 7 different colors of mortar throughout, radius walls in multiple areas, transitions of multiple colors of block and mortar with both split, smooth and honed faces and a soldier course banding at the top of wall that was intended to be reminiscent of the 1931 building.
The replacement facility was constructed on the same plot as the school that was demolished with that construction running concurrently with the use of the school. This began with the gym and then progressed to other areas as demolition was completed. The continued use of the building during the school year through this process required a continuing and high level priority on safety for the project.
The finished product retained a high quality of design and aesthetics while establishing and satisfying the structural integrity of the product.
All masonry waste materials were crushed on site and donated for the use on remaining portions of the project.
